Description

“Not quite what I had in mind” presents a layered abstract where deep blues and rusted ambers meet muted teal and mauve. The surface is filled with energetic brushwork and scraped-back layers to reveal unexpected colour and texture. Small gold rectangles and rough geometric marks punctuate broader washes, creating a push-and-pull between structure and looseness. Visible drips, scuffs, and smudges are left intentionally—they interrupt the field and keep the composition active from every angle. From a distance it reads as a single mood; up close the tactile surfaces and subtle details reward closer inspection. It makes a strong focal point in a living room, office, or entryway and would be a confident addition to your space.

Personal note from the artist:
Inspired by the landscape surrounding my former home in Australia – acres of bushland – dry and yet abundant with life. We lived with the constant sounds of nature – birds, cicadas, rustling gum leaves and wallabies crashing through the bush. A small river coursed through the gorge but the birds and other creatures still took the time to delight us by visiting the small rockpool we created below our deck.
The title of this painting is quite literal in its meaning – I had a completely different direction in mind when I started this painting. But I found, as I often do, that as I painted and changed, the work refused to bend to my will. It had something else in mind, and all I could do was respond to that and get us to a point where we, both the painting and I, agreed.

About the print:

Border Size Explained
The passepartout (also known as a mat or border) surrounds your print, creating a professional presentation and adding visual depth to your artwork. When you select a passepartout, your print is produced one size smaller than the size you selected to fit perfectly within the border.

On framed prints the passepartout is a real piece of acid-free matboard. On prints ordered without a frame, the border is printed into the print file instead, because a loose mat cannot be shipped or mounted without a frame. Your customer receives one sheet in the selected size, with the artwork printed inside a coloured border.

Window sizes for our passepartouts:
30×40 cm (window: A4)
40×50 cm (window: 30×40 cm)
50×70 cm (window: 40×50 cm)
60×80 cm (window: 50×70 cm)
70×70 cm (window: 50×50 cm)
70×100 cm (window: 50×70 cm)
A3 (window: A4)

Important: Please note that some passepartout window sizes have a different aspect ratio than the outer frame size. For example, a 40×50 cm frame with a 30×40 cm window uses a different proportion. In these cases, your artwork may need to be cropped slightly to fit the window dimensions properly.
